Oral hygiene is a learned behavior that is best taught from an early age. Good oral hygiene is imperative in good oral health, and good oral health is linked with good overall health.

Dentists recommend brushing at least two times a day, flossing, and using an antibacterial mouthwash at least once per day. Establishing this oral regimen in children will encourage good oral hygiene throughout their entire lives.

Besides daily brushing, flossing, and mouthwash, six-month cleanings are just as essential. While regular cleaning helps prevent tooth decay by removing most of the plaque that builds up on teeth, it is impossible to remove all of the plaque, especially at the gum line and between teeth. The six-month cleanings remove the remaining plaque so that bacteria cannot form and cause cavities.

Effective cleaning depends a lot on having the correct tools. Your toothbrush should fit well to the size and shape of your mouth so that it can reach the back teeth easily. The toothbrush bristles should be soft, and the toothbrush should be thrown away every six months (although some people convert some of their old brushes to cleaning brushes for small spaces around the house).

If you see Dr. Keyes for regular professional cleanings, you will get a new toothbrush every six months and will not have to worry about forgetting to buy a new one. Your new toothbrush will also come with a sample tube of toothpaste, some floss, and a small bottle of mouthwash, which are all great for taking on overnight trips.
